Designed by CuldeSac for Carel, a family-owned Romanian company known for their bespoke solid wood furniture. During the project, the product design team at CuldeSac collaborated with Carel to create a fresh new product design identity for the brand, drawing inspiration from the raw and maximalist aesthetics of brutalist architecture. The first product under the newly established product identity is Opium, a side table designed to work from home.

Our focus was on creating simple constructions using solid wood. The final design needed to strike a balance between sturdiness and lightness, while providing space to accommodate a laptop. The final design is minimal yet robust, drawing inspiration from construction beams with its C-shaped structure. It pays homage to brutalist design, embodying strength and simplicity. Opium’s thoughtful angled design brings the top of the table closer to the user, making it perfect for working on your laptop while comfortably sitting on the sofa.
